Arizona's political representatives are pushing back against the Trump administration's recent move to cut federal support for college readiness programs specifically the TRIO Upward Bound grants, at Pima Community College. In a collective effort, Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego, alongside Representatives Greg Stanton and Yassamin Ansari penned a letter addressed to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, advocating for the reversal of the decision that threatens to widen the educational gap for underprivileged students.
The grants in question were set to support low-income, first-generation college aspirants, but the Trump administration abruptly rescinded them, citing a misalignment with policy priorities. According to a release on Senator Kelly's website, the affected programs at Pima Community College's Northwest and Downtown campuses were blindsided with termination notices a mere week before their expected funding date, without prior warning or clear explanation for the cut.
The bipartisan group of Arizona lawmakers underscored the detrimental effects this action would have on the community. "The cancellation of TRIO Upward Bound grants at Pima Community College will deprive first- generation and low-income Arizonan youth of transformative opportunities for academic and professional growth," they stated, elaborating on the significance of the program in aiding students who are often overlooked and underserved, as reported by the Senator's Office. The lawmakers also pointed to research indicating that Upward Bound participants have a higher likelihood of enrolling in and completing college compared to their socioeconomically comparable peers.
In their plea, the legislators highlighted the importance of TRIO programs, emphasizing their concern for the broader implications such cuts could have on educational support initiatives. They concluded with a strong statement of advocacy, "We strongly urge you to give it your full and fair consideration," referring to Pima Community College's appeal to have its Upward Bound grants reinstated, and insisting on the preservation of federal support for the TRIO programs, not just for PCC, but as a statewide and national imperative, according to the Senator's Office.
