In Arizona, a spat has unfurled between State Schools Chief Tom Horne and Attorney General Kris Mayes concerning the release of said funds. According to a statement from Horne, he is setting the record straight after Mayes claimed victory for the schools receiving their much-needed allotment.
It seems Mayes issued a statement suggesting that it was her lawsuit against the federal government that prompted the release of the school funds. Horne quickly corrected that narrative. “The federal government never canceled those funds. It delayed paying them in order to do a study to make sure they were being used properly for education purposes,” Horne declared. When the initial pause on funds caused panic, Horne was there, stating it was simply "a positive review" and assuring the public that this was the anticipated outcome, as reported by the Arizona Department of Education.
The funds in question were indeed released, but not, Horne insists, because of any litigation prowess on Mayes' part. "The federal government released the funds upon conclusion of the study, as had been foreseen, and not because a court case was filed," he said to the Arizona Department of Education.
Horne also pointed out a delay in Mayes' victory lap. “Also, the funds were released on July 25. The Attorney General‘s release today is behind the times,” according to the Arizona Department of Education.
