Parents in Arlington breathed a cautious sigh of relief Monday as district officials declared that the student who brought a loaded firearm to Arlington High School last year won't be returning to the campus. The student, a 14-year-old boy at the time of the incident, faced felony charges in February 2024 after he was found with a gun that had a chambered round, the safety off, and an additional loaded magazine, as reported by KING 5.
The decision to not allow the student's return was mutual, arising from a discussion between the district superintendent and the family, although details couldn't be shared due to state and federal privacy laws. Despite earlier statements from district officials that they were legally obligated to consider his return, the reversal came prior to a board meeting packed with concerned parents. "I'm deeply concerned by the recent situation involving a student who brought a loaded handgun onto campus last year," one parent expressed at the meeting, a sentiment that seemed to echo throughout the community, as noted by KING 5.
Having earlier faced the prospect of the student's return, parents had rallied against the potential decision, as mentioned by MyNorthwest. They crafted petitions urging the district to reconsider, troubled by the initial plan that would have mandated staff to monitor the student at all times and subjected him to daily searches while barring him from carrying a backpack. The backdrop to their concern was a federal law requiring the district to provide education to all students, regardless, a spokesman had informed KING 5.
This development provided closure to the anxious anticipation that had been percolating since it was reported by KOMO News that the student was poised to return—parents were not ready to have the student back in the school environment knowing his history, especially as the incident had led to his expulsion and criminal charges; "was involved in an incident involving a firearm at Arlington High School that led to an arrest and criminal charges," one parent's petition read, making it clear where the community stood.
