Bloomington's own Fritjof Engebretson may have just three years under his belt as a firefighter, but he's already become a fixture of local heroism and dedication, according to a recent feature by the City of Bloomington's Fire Department. Switching from part-time to full-time last April, Engebretson's commitment encompasses fire suppression and search and rescue operations, not to mention his role as an Emergency Medical Technician.
Embracing a life that juggles continual training and high-octane calls to action, Engebretson admits his strong passion for helping those caught in the terrifying grasp of a medical or fire emergency, and it’s a sentiment echoing his military past where the structure and teamwork left a lasting mark, “The structure and teamwork in the fire service remind me of the military,” he shared with the City of Bloomington's internal publication, a sentiment that anchors his present dedication. It's a demanding job, featuring 24-hour shifts that demand not just his time, but also the understanding and support of family, friends, and loved ones who stand behind him.
While not enveloped in the flames of duty or threading the needle of emergency medical response, Engebretson pours himself into life's other joys with hiking, camping, snowboarding, playing sports, and walking his dogs Brizzy and Blue, illustrating that even those who dance daily with danger find solace and rebalance in the embrace of nature and the cheer of companionship both human and canine.
In keeping with his service to the community, Engebretson also extends a piece of advice that could save lives, recommending that citizens, "Sleep with your bedroom doors closed to create a safer space in case of fire," a simple yet potentially life-saving measure that underlines his commitment to safeguarding the community even when off the clock, advice that exemplifies his dedication to fire safety amid a life steeped in the pursuit of preserving the welfare of others, much like a beacon that not only warns of hazards but guides one to safer shores.
