Bloomington residents have seen changes on local streets since the city introduced a 25 mph speed limit last year, altering the flow of neighborhood traffic. According to the City of Bloomington, the measure is intended to enhance safety for all road users, including drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Driving at slower speeds on residential streets is widely understood to reduce both the likelihood and severity of crashes. Slower limits enhance safety in areas where children and families frequently play and travel. This change aligns with the authority granted to cities by the state legislature in 2019 to set their own speed limits.
Although the initiative applies to local streets, the city was unable to alter speed limits on roads managed by Hennepin County. On larger roads in Bloomington that fall outside county control, speed limits were updated to reflect the more cautious pace set for local streets.
The city is encouraging residents to help raise awareness of the new speed limits. Complimentary yard signs are available for pickup at Civic Plaza or at various community events across Bloomington. As per the city's announcement, these signs "should not be placed in the City’s rights of way which includes within 10 feet of the curb or intersection, or in public parks or public areas."
