The Ward 5 Selection Committee of Norman has put forth its recommendation for the vacant City Council seat, choosing Brandon Nofire to potentially fill the position left by former council representative Michael Nash. On Thursday, the committee's decision was made public at a meeting, pushing Nofire to the forefront of the City Council's attention for their upcoming session, according to the City of Norman.
Following Nash's resignation, the committee, comprised of Aysha Prather, Randy Carter, Shavonne Evans, Heidi Smith, and John Griego, was tasked with seeking a suitable interim council member for Ward 5. They reviewed over a dozen applications after the call for candidates went out in early August. The recommendations process ended with four individuals, including Dianna Hutzel, Ben Fenwick, Brandon Clark, and the recommended Brandon Nofire, being interviewed for the interim post, according to an announcement on the City of Norman's official website.
This proposed appointment is slated for discussion on September 9 during the Norman City Council meeting. Should the council give its approval, Nofire would be sworn in and occupy the seat with immediate effect, serving the Ward 5 community until an elected official is chosen in February 2026 to complete the rest of the term, as reported by the City of Norman.
The committee carefully reviewed their options and chose Nofire to represent Ward 5 after Nash’s recent departure. If the City Council approves the recommendation next month, Nofire will take the oath of office. Other candidates will step aside as a new chapter begins for the ward.
