The Burlingame community is reeling from the tragic loss of 4-and-a-half-year-old Ayden Fang, who was killed when a car veered onto the sidewalk earlier this month. An outpouring of grief and support culminated yesterday in a vigil where residents, family members, and city officials gathered to mourn and call for action. Ayden's death is raising urgent questions about pedestrian safety in the area and is sparking a movement to prevent similar tragedies.

In a report by KTVU, it was revealed that the accident occurred on August 8, when Ayden was struck by a car that had just hit an e-bike. The 19-year-old woman driver reportedly lost control and drove onto the sidewalk, where Ayden and a 6-year-old girl were playing outside the Truffle Poke Bar. While the young girl was hospitalized and has been since released, Ayden succumbed to his injuries. The Fang family has voiced a heartfelt plea for the community to "Protect our city," a message encapsulated by a LEGO tower Ayden had built just days before the fatal accident.

Ayden's influence on his community was evident at the vigil, where relatives, teachers, and first responders shared their memories and sorrow. According to a CBS News interview with Ayden's teacher, Amna Rehmane, "He was an amazing student," and added, "a teacher's dream." His father, Ming Fang, relayed through tears a poignant story about Ayden's last days and his simple but profound LEGO message.

With the sting of fresh grief lingering, the Fang family is now focused on bringing positive change in Ayden's memory. A GoFundMe page, initially set up to help with counseling costs, has expanded its mission to include pedestrian safety initiatives and a memorial scholarship at FSM Montessori, Ayden's school.

The Truffle Poke Bar, the site of the tragedy, plans to reopen on Wednesday with a fundraiser to support these pedestrian safety initiatives. Ayden's uncle, Michael Deng, in a remark obtained by CBS News, urged the community "to carry on Ayden's legacy by living like Ayden did." He continued, "His love was pure, and he gave it freely."
