Cabarrus County steps into the arena of opioid crisis intervention with the roll-out of their Cabarrus CORE (Collaborative Opioid Recovery and Education) initiative, slated for a community kick-off on Wednesday, Aug. 28. In a press release, the county announced a free event to educate the public about available services and programs, made possible through opioid settlement funds which are also financing the event. The gathering is scheduled for 6 p.m., after doors open at 5:30 p.m., at the Library and Active Living Center at Afton Ridge, indicating the inclusive nature of the initiative.
The embrace of CORE by Cabarrus County weaves together the fabric of organizations countywide. Its roster includes Cabarrus County Government, the Cabarrus Health Alliance, and several key players like Adult & Teen Challenge, Cabarrus EMS, and others. As published in Cabarrus County recent article, Virginia Fagg, Cabarrus Opioid Project Manager, emphasized the drive behind CORE, noting, "This is about connecting people to the resources and programs they need." Echoed in her words is the aim to tailor the initiative for the community's specific needs.
With a forward-looking vision, CORE is positioned to manage a stream of funding that amounts to nearly $23 million through 2038, aimed at grappling with the opioid crisis on the local front. The initiative vows to employ these funds in evidence-based strategies that will, by transparency and accountability, ensure the services reach those of Cabarrus County's residents and medical providers who face the brunt of this epidemic, while laying the foundation for a safer community.
Setting the tone for the launch event is a roster of community-oriented activities, ranging from complimentary food to vehicle exploration, aimed at showcasing how by secondary trauma from responding to opioid overdose calls, EMS workers can become supported by an Aussiedoodle therapy dog, Bingo, thanks to settlement funds. Robin Hayes, former U.S. Congressman and Founder of Bridge to 100, is among the notable figures geared to deliver an address as a special guest speaker. The organizers look to foster a space where connection, collaboration, and hope can bloom through interaction and introduction to the leaders and partners in this life-changing endeavor.
