Excitement buzzed through Garcia Elementary School as students donning miniature construction gear symbolically tore down a paper wall, ushering in a series of renovations funded by the 2024 Canutillo Bond program, Canutillo ISD reported. More than $7 million is being funneled into upgrades, including new safety measures, HVAC systems, and tech enhancements aimed at revitalizing the school to meet a burgeoning Upper Valley population surge.

Principal Janet Plaza highlighted that the bond represents an investment in the area’s youth, expressing her anticipation for the school's transformation into a source of community pride, according to Canutillo ISD. These upgrades are expected to accommodate existing students and invite new ones, while adapting to the rapid residential and commercial rise.

Interim Superintendent Jesica Arellano touched on the broader implications of the project beyond structural enhancements, emphasizing the bond's role in empowering children with vital life skills in settings that nurture curiosity and teacher excellence, "Every child, regardless of which campus they attend, deserves to learn in a place that is safe, modern and worthy of their potential," Arellano told Canutillo ISD.

Further echoing the bond's significance, Canutillo ISD Board President Armando Rodriguez addressed the district's challenge of staying ahead of the rapid local growth, citing over 8,000 new homes on the rise. This expansion not only comprises new families and businesses but equally signifies an increase in the educational demands, and Rodriguez believes the bond will ensure the district leads rather than follows.
