In a dramatic turnaround, charges have been dropped against Mahendra Patel, a man previously accused of attempting to kidnap a toddler at an Acworth Walmart. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the dismissal occurred swiftly on Wednesday, with the Cobb County District Attorney and presiding judge in alignment on the decision.
Patel had faced serious allegations after an incident on March 18, where he was said to have attempted to abduct a child from his mother, Caroline Miller. The story unraveled when video footage emerged that contradicted the initial account of events. During the court hearing, Patel expressed his relief and gratitude, mentioning the surprising outpour of support from strangers across the country, as he told FOX 5.
Cobb County District Attorney Sonya F. Allen released a statement elaborating on why the charges were dropped, as obtained by FOX 5, emphasizing the constructive dialogue between the parties involved and their desire to move forward. Patel's attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, criticized the initial handling of the case, stating that "I think what happened was there was a rush to judgment and I think the police didn't fully investigate the case."
A different angle came from an NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta interview where Patel described his family's ordeal, “Our family went through a lot of hell,” as a result of the allegations. As reported by NBC News, Patel, who was at one point jailed for six weeks, emphasized his innocence, stating he was merely attempting to assist Miller with her child.
Patel was cleared of all charges after his defense team presented video evidence that contradicted the initial accusations.
