Charlotte County's bravest were in the spotlight during the annual Public Safety Appreciation & Recognition Banquet, an evening dedicated to celebrating the heroic actions and steadfast service of first responders. The banquet, held recently, offered accolades to those who demonstrated exemplary bravery and excellence in the line of duty.

In a testament to their valor, Lt. Jefferson Mendel, River Silva, and Kelly Lechleidner were bestowed with the Medal of Valor, while the Medal of Bravery was awarded to Lt. Michael Brucci and Michael Pietraniec. These honors were in recognition of their daring efforts during a house fire on May 20, where they successfully rescued trapped individuals from an engulfed home on Barre Drive. Despite the personal danger, their actions exemplified the commitment, to safeguarding their community.

The night also celebrated individual achievements with Dakota Brittain being named Firefighter of the Year and Louis Chieffo securing Firefighter-EMT of the Year. Further commendations were presented, including Caleb VanHelden as Paramedic of the Year, and Battalion Chief Michael Seneca as Officer of the Year.

Other award categories recognized the wide-reaching impact of public safety personnel. The CARES Award was given to Lt. Felix Hernandez for exceptional service, and Dawn Johnston received the Keystone Award for her significant contributions. Lifesaving achievements were highlighted through the Phoenix Awards, celebrating those involved in the resuscitation and recovery of cardiac arrest patients; among them were Fabian Alvarez, Lt. Brendan Betancourt,, and Adriano Cabrera.

"These awards reflect not only moments of extraordinary valor and bravery, but also the dedication our personnel bring to the job every day. They tell the story of who we are," Public Safety Director/Fire Chief Jason Fair told Charlotte County. He added, "Whether it’s rushing toward danger, providing critical medical care, or ensuring operations run smoothly behind the scenes, each honoree represents the very best of public safety."
