The N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program has launched its "Booze It & Lose It" campaign to reduce impaired driving during the Labor Day holiday period. Announced on Wednesday last week in Charlotte, the campaign runs from yesterday through September 7. This effort coincides with the "100 Deadliest Days," the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teen-related traffic fatalities are more common, as per the North Carolina Department of Transportation release.

Drivers can expect increased law enforcement, including checkpoints and saturation patrols across the state. During last year’s campaign, there were 444 alcohol-related crashes, resulting in 11 deaths.

Officials highlighted the need for safe driving practices, including following speed limits, avoiding distractions, wearing seat belts, and not driving under the influence. Support for the initiative came from state and local leaders, including N.C. Board of Transportation Chairman Tony Lathrop, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, and AAA spokesperson Tiffany Wright.

Authorities emphasized that the campaign’s goal is to prevent crashes and keep roadways safe during the busy holiday travel period.
