Charlotte is diving into a month-long effort to clear the air with the return of Fresh Air Rides (FAR), a campaign challenging community members to shift gears and rethink their commuting habits. Running from today to August 31, the initiative by Mecklenburg County Air Quality, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), Connect Centralina, and Sustain Charlotte aims to curb the city's rising air pollution, particularly omnipresent during the scorching summer months.
"FAR is a fun way for the community to get involved with air quality. Cars are our number one source of air pollution, and Fresh Air Rides specifically emphasizes individual decisions that contribute to higher levels of ozone and particulate matter," Leslie Rhodes, Mecklenburg County Air Quality Director, told Mecklenburg County official news release. Participants are encouraged to log their environment-friendly travel methods on the FAR dashboard, where even a single entry could lead to winning some enticing prizes.
Prizes for the dedicated air savers include an e-scooter with a helmet for first place, a Fitbit Versa for second place, and two tickets to the Daniel Stowe Conservancy for the third-place winner. With weekly prizes also up for grabs, the campaign is as much about immediate rewards as it is about fostering longer-term change. "Fresh Air Rides is a great reminder that our daily transportation choices have a real impact on air quality and public health," said Meg Fencil, director of engagement and impact at Sustain Charlotte, in the same official news release.
Last year, 285 Charlotte residents joined the campaign, effectively avoiding over 2,200 trips by single occupancy vehicles and importantly reducing air pollution by approximately 120 pounds. "Riding public transit is one of the most effective ways individuals can help improve air quality," Catherine Kummer, CATS director of marketing and communications, business partnerships, explained in the announcement. The initiative seems determined to continue building upon this momentum, inspiring actions that pay dividends well beyond the allure of grand prizes.
Open to anyone over 18 in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, FAR extends an invitation to make small but significant lifestyle switches. Be it a decision to pack a lunch instead of driving out or forming a vanpool, each choice carries weight in the collective effort to sustain a cleaner, healthier environment.
