The NC Cooperative Extension – Chatham County Center, in collaboration with NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers, is inviting the public to join the Great Southeast Pollinator Census this coming Friday and Saturday. This event is an opportunity to become part of a larger movement and contribute to the protection of critical pollinator populations that are facing environmental challenges such as development, climate change, and invasive species
The census serves to provide researchers with necessary data to better understand pollinator numbers and advocate for their protection. To tangibly contribute, participants will be assigned to count and report the types of pollinating insects observed. The NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers are set to offer guidance at several gardens throughout the county. They're teaching participants not only to count but also to submit their findings, in an effort to substantiate the collective knowledge on these indispensable creatures.
On Friday, a morning session is scheduled at the Chatham Alliance Teaching Garden on 50 W. Salisbury St., Pittsboro, followed by three simultaneous evening sessions at different sites, including the NC Cooperative Extension Pollinator Paradise Garden and the Collaborative Garden in Siler City, according to Chatham County’s official news announcement. The following day, activities will continue at the Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Demonstration Garden, where educational booths and free gifts for children will accompany the census activities.
Participants can visit any event location during the scheduled times and spend as little or as much time as they like. Completing a single plant census takes about 15 minutes.
