In an effort to raise awareness and remember those lost to the ongoing battle against drug overdose, Chatham County is stepping up with a commemorative program at the end of this month. The Chatham County Diversion and Advocacy Programs, in collaboration with the Chatham County Public Health Department, will be hosting a free community event on August 29, devoted to honoring lives claimed by overdose.
The gathering is primed to provide a space for community members and leaders to come together, stand in remembrance, and comfort one another in shared grief. Attendees will have chances to contribute personal reflections and recollections. Among the tables and speakers, personalized signs will be placed on the lawn of the Wren Memorial Library, allowing for a visual representation of the lives that once graced this earth. "During the celebration, Chatham County staff and leaders, as well as community members, will honor those lost to drug overdose," as detailed in Chatham County's official announcement.
Lending an additional layer of support and potential life-saving knowledge, the event includes a naloxone training session. Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is an emergency medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The Chatham County Public Health Department will lead this training for those interested, offering a beacon of hope and practical defense against a crisis that continues to ravage communities across the nation.
Recognizing the importance of community involvement and the role of the media in spreading awareness, Chatham County officials encourage media attendance and coverage of this poignant gathering. The public is invited to the Wren Memorial Library from 3 – 4:30 P.M. to be a part of this communal day of reflection, learning, and togetherness.
