A rescue operation was conducted by the United States Coast Guard Air Station Detroit early Thursday, pulling three stranded boaters from Lake Erie's Ontario's Middle Island after their sailboat ran aground. According to CBS News Detroit, the boaters had been taking part in a sailing race before worsening weather made their 29-foot vessel difficult to manage, ultimately leading to their predicament.
After receiving a distress signal at 12:13 a.m., the Coast Guard Sector Detroit launched an immediate response that included an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a response boat from Station Marblehead. As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the sector quickly issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast while deploying its assets to assist the boaters in need.
The helicopter crew arrived on the scene and sent down a rescue swimmer who assessed the situation. In what was AST2 Joshua Price's first live hoist rescue assignment, all three individuals were lifted into the helicopter using a rescue basket. CBS News Detroit reported that the survivors were subsequently transported to Port Clinton, Ohio, where they were reunited with friends and family, relieved but in stable condition.
As per CBS News Detroit, the Coast Guard revealed that "The survivors were participating in a sailing race prior to weather deteriorating, making the vessel difficult to manage." This rescue highlights the readiness and skill of the Coast Guard to respond rapidly to maritime distress in the Great Lakes region. Middle Island, just south of Pelee Island, is part of Point Pelee National Park in Canada, a spot known for its rich biodiversity but also for the challenging conditions boaters can encounter.
