In response to the urgent need for wildfire preparedness, the Greater Flagstaff Forests Partnership (GFFP), in collaboration with Coconino County and local fire departments, is rolling out a series of community meetings. Aimed at bolstering defenses against the perennial threat of wildfires, these gatherings will inform the development of a countywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). A schedule of the meetings, encompassing various dates and locations, has been made available for residents looking to participate in these critical conversations.
The CWPP meetings begin on August 27 at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and continue through October 1, ending with Tusayan FD. Fire departments, including the City of Williams FD and High Country Fire & Rescue, will be present. The meetings give the community a chance to learn about the CWPP, meet fire staff, and give feedback. The Kaibab Estates West FD meeting on September 23 will run from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and offer a more detailed look at fire preparedness.
The CWPP initiative, a first of its kind for the area, is underpinned by a collaboration amongst numerous stakeholders, from fire and land management agencies to academic institutions. As reported by Coconino County's official announcement, SWCA Environmental Consultants has been contracted to spearhead the plan's preparation, bringing technical expertise to the forefront of this local endeavor.
Highlights of the CWPP include strategies for reducing hazardous fuels, educating the public, and lessening the potential for structures to ignite. Also under review, improved wildfire response capabilities are a critical agenda item, looking to safeguard Coconino County residents, deepening their connection to their land and well-being. In addition, a community survey, which takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, is being circulated to gather confidential and anonymous feedback to help shape the CWPP's framework.
