In Collierville, a suburb with a rapidly growing population, the town's leadership has decided to invest in a significant expansion of the Collierville Burch Library. This development is set to include a sprawling event center, aimed at fostering community engagement and supporting the evolving requirements of its residents. As reported by the official Collierville town website, during a mid-year retreat on August 20th, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen selected the "better" option from three proposed expansion plans that promises a blend of new construction and renovation efforts.
Mayor Maureen Fraser expressed the town's ambitious vision for the project, stating, "We want to create a place the community can be proud of for many years to come," according to the town's website. The proposed event center will reportedly boast a modular design that can house up to 300 people and split into three separate rooms, catering to various community activities and private functions. The center is not only intended to be a public resource but is also expected to generate additional income to support library operations, and programming.
The budget for the project, which includes $10,797,820 earmarked for expansion and the remaining $1,462,010 for renovation, totals an estimated $12,259,830. This cost takes into account the facility’s need to cater to an audience that has significantly expanded since the library's inception in 2001. Breakdowns of these costs, as well as architectural concepts, were showcased by Library Director Lisa Plath and Deputy Town Administrator Katrina Atkins, as noted by the town's announcement.
Vice Mayor/Alderman John Stamps highlighted the project's broader scope beyond traditional library services, elucidating, "This expansion isn’t just about books, it’s about building a space where Collierville can come together." Moreover, Alderman Missy Marshall pointed out that $8.6 million has been pre-allocated within the Town's budget, which reflects prudent fiscal foresight and a dedication to measured community development.
The library expansion is also set to include state-of-the-art Children’s and Teen Spaces, alongside versatile community rooms that can accommodate workshops and meetings. The Board is banking on enhancing the project through a Capital Campaign by the Friends of the Library, aiming to fund extra features that promise to elevate the facility. The Collierville community will be given the chance to play an active role in support of the space that aspires to be a central hub of interaction and inclusivity for the town's residents.
