Commuters on U.S. Route 63 can expect a shift in their usual travel routine as construction work advances on key bridges in Columbia. According to Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the changes, part of the renovations to enhance the I-70/U.S. Route 63 interchange, may not significantly impact drivers, but the flow of traffic will be altered starting next week.
As the improvements near completion for two northbound bridges, traffic originally channeled through the southbound lanes will transition over to the freshly built northbound side between Broadway and Vandiver Drive. This switch, commencing on Wednesday, enables the rehabilitation work on the southbound overpass to begin. "Motorists will be head-to-head in the northbound lanes through the end of September," as noted in the MoDOT announcement.
Despite the redirection, officials suggest that most regular travelers, particularly those headed north, should not experience considerable differences in their commute. Access points for entry and exit along U.S. Route 63 are slated to stay operational throughout this period.
During this traffic shift, road crews will undertake the task of erasing former pavement markings and applying new ones. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and patience when traveling through these zones. As with all such endeavors, the schedule remains subject to the whims of weather conditions, reminding us that infrastructure, like all human ventures, must bow to nature's unpredictability.
This construction effort is a component of MoDOT's extensive Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Supported by Missouri's FY2024 budget, which allots $2.8 billion in General Revenue towards the project, plans include the addition of a third lane to nearly 200 miles of I-70, stretching from Blue Springs to Wentzville, in an ambitious state-wide infrastructure expansion.
