In a turn of events that may leave egg aficionados feeling a bit scrambled, a nationwide recall of eggs has been initiated following a multi-state Salmonella outbreak. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, alongside the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and several federal agencies, traced a string of illnesses back to eggs from Country Eggs, LLC, as reported by the County of Los Angeles.
The large brown, cage-free eggs marketed as “sunshine yolks” or “omega-3 golden yolks” were distributed between June 16 and July 9, primarily in California and Nevada. More than 95 confirmed Salmonella cases have been reported across 14 states, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. The eggs were sold at various grocery stores and to foodservice distributors under carton brand names such as Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets. They can be identified by the code CA 7695 and sell-by dates ranging from July 1 to September 18, as per the County of Los Angeles.
Consumers are advised to avoid eating the recalled eggs and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase, according to the County of Los Angeles. If you've eaten these eggs and are feeling unwell, it's wise to seek medical care, considering the unpleasant nature of Salmonella's typical symptoms, which include not only abdominal pain but also nausea and vomiting, headache, and bodily aches.
Despite most individuals being able to recover without treatment within a week, it's crucial to stay hydrated, keeping up with fluids like water, broth, or electrolyte drinks, especially since symptoms like diarrhea can be quite dehydrating. This infection can cause severe complications for some, such as the very young, elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. For those who may have fallen ill from these or any other suspicious food items, Los Angeles County has a digital battlement ready for you to file a report at their online complaint portal, no lab results needed.
