A tragic three-vehicle collision early Saturday morning in St. Tammany Parish claimed the life of a Covington woman and inflicted severe injuries upon two others. Louisiana State Police have confirmed the accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the junction of Louisiana Highway 36 and Highway 3241.
The victim was identified as Jennifer L. Ayo, a 39-year-old resident of Covington. FOX8Live reported that Ayo was at the wheel of a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, traveling south on LA 3241, when she proceeded into the intersection and inadvertently crossed into the opposing traffic on LA 36, where her vehicle was struck by a 2010 Honda Fit.
Subsequently, Ayo's Camaro was propelled into the eastbound lane, suffering another collision, this time from a 2009 Ford F-150. This sequence of violent impacts tragically resulted in Ayo's death at the scene. Authorities noted that Ayo was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. The drivers of both the Honda and the Ford were restrained with seatbelts; the former experienced life-threatening injuries, while the latter sustained moderate injuries, as detailed by WDSU.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Louisiana State Police gathered routine toxicology samples from all three drivers involved in the collision. The results of these samples are pending. The condition of the hospitalized drivers has not been released. According to WWLTV, troopers are continuing to investigate why Ayo entered the intersection and whether other factors may have contributed to the fatal event.
