The Junius Heights neighborhood in Dallas is about to see its iconic columns restored to former glory, thanks to a city initiative that aims to preserve historic landmarks. These two stone pillars, constructed in the early 1900s and now situated at Abrams Triangles Park, near Abrams Road and Tremont Street, have witnessed the transformation of the city from its nascent days into the bustling metropolis it is today.
These 30-foot-tall structures, which Rudy Karimi, District 14 Park and Recreation, describes as a "beloved symbol" of the district, narrowly escaped demolition during the road expansion efforts in the 1970s. They were instead dismantled and stored, later finding a new home at their current location. A social media post from the Park and Recreation Department's Karimi recounts the columns' storied past and heralds their upcoming restoration, made possible by funds from the 2024 Dallas Bond.
The Dallas Park and Recreation Department, in partnership with Phoenix 1 Restoration & Construction, plans to kick off the restoration by the year's end. The undertaking is seen as a crucial step in maintaining the historical integrity of the Junius Heights Historic District, an area that holds a significant place in the local community's identity and collective memory.
