A Davenport man faces serious charges following a federal indictment related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe recently announced. The individual, identified as Mauricio Flores, 36, could be sentenced to up to 20 years in a federal prison if convicted on the possession charges laid out before him.
Derived from court documents, a search warrant executed at Flores' residence linked him to a dark website specializing in CSAM. Although every defendant carries the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, on Flores's cellphone, which the authorities found to contain files containing CSAM, is headed for forfeiture by the United States, indicating its alleged role in the offense.
This investigation, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, brings to light the continuous effort by law enforcement to dismantle the networks associated with the exploitation of children. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Muriel Moore.
Started by the Department of Justice in May 2006, Project Safe Childhood stands behind this investigation – a nationwide initiative dedicated to the battle against the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) lead the charge, which aims to not only locate and bring offenders to justice but also rescue victims in the process. Citizens wanting to learn more about this initiative can visit the official Project Safe Childhood website.
