Get ready, Denton, the quirky and beloved local art installation that transforms ordinary seating into extraordinary spectacles is making a comeback this fall. In a social media announcement by the City of Denton, TX - City Hall, the "Scary Chairy Orchard" is set to return this October, after last year's installation drew widespread community involvement and acclaim.
According to the City of Denton, TX - City Hall, the event will build on the success of the previous year, which featured over 170 creatively upcycled chairs. "After an amazing community art installation last year, featuring over 170 chairs, we're looking to make this space even bigger and better," the announcement stated. Prospective participants have until September 19 to register for a chance to design their spine-tingling seat.
The Scary Chairy Orchard originated from the Chairy Orchard, a grassroots art space co-founded by neighbors Anne Pearson and Judy Smith. An iconic piece of Denton's cultural landscape, it showcased an array of eclectic chairs in the shared space between their homes. Unfortunately, it closed in June 2023, but the spirit has lived on in its Halloween-themed successor. The Scary Chairy Orchard not only honors the legacy, but it also incorporates some of the original chairs from the Chairy Orchard's collection into its display.
