The Denver Clerk & Recorder's office announced that it will be closed on Friday, August 29, due to a city-mandated furlough day. Despite the closure, there will still be some election staff present to accommodate those wishing to file as write-in candidates for the upcoming 2025 Coordinated Election. The deadline to submit the necessary affidavits falls precisely on this day, underscoring the significance of keeping election services operational, albeit limited.
However, those in need of other services typically provided by the DCR will find doors shuttered and phones unanswered until the following Tuesday. The office also stated that it will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. All DCR operations are expected to return to their normal schedule on Tuesday, September 2. This brief hiatus in service comes as part of a wider effort where the Denver Clerk & Recorder's office stands in "solidarity with our fellow civil servants," according to the City and County of Denver. The site notes two furlough days, the first on August 29 and another to occur on November 28.
The decision to implement furlough days is reflective of budgetary pressures that many civic institutions face, requiring employees to participate in a tiered furlough day schedule based on pay grade. Such measures, while practical from a fiscal standpoint, often interrupt the regular cadence of public service for both employees and the community they serve. The mandated furlough days were intended as a remedy for budgetary constraints, potentially impacting the overall efficiency of various city departments, including that of the DCR.
The DCR has assured constituents that the limitations on staff and services are temporary and necessary. They have pledged to maintain a commitment to public service during these mandatory budgetary adjustments. While nearly all operations are on pause for the furlough, the process of democracy remains active as the DCR ensures that the election cycle remains unaffected, with staff on hand to process any last-minute affidavits for write-in candidates.
