A Detroit man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his 13-year-old sister at a Canton apartment complex, according to CBS News Detroit. The accused, 23-year-old Jay-Veon McKinney, is facing involuntary manslaughter, felony firearm, and careless discharge causing death charges after the July 29 incident at the Ridgeline Apartments.
Detailed reports indicate that McKinney was allegedly playing with two pistols when one discharged, striking his sister in the chest. In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described the shooting as "completely preventable" and highlighted the actions as "dangerous and criminal." McKinney's arraignment in the 35th District Court saw him enter a not guilty plea, with the court setting a $500,000 personal recognizance bond coupled with a tether and house arrest, as reported by CBS Detroit.
During the arraignment, the judge indicated willingness to revisit bond conditions at the probable cause hearing set for August 14. A preliminary examination is scheduled for August 22. If found guilty, McKinney could serve up to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and additional consecutive terms for the firearm charges.
