A Detroit man has been sentenced to serve between 18 and 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his 8-year-old stepson, Adren Thimes Jr. The fatal beating occurred in November 2024 at the family's home on Clairmont Avenue in Detroit. According to reports by ClickOnDetroit, the Wayne County Medical Examiner established the cause of death as multiple blunt force trauma to the head.

Jamarr Hill, the 37-year-old stepfather, was originally charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse. However, as part of a plea agreement, those charges were dismissed. The plea allowed Hill to potentially avoid a harsher sentence, but during the hearing, emotional testimony from Adren's family painted a starkly different picture. The boy's grandmother branded Hill as a "monster," lamenting that whatever time he was sentenced to would not be enough. This sentiment was echoed in courtroom statements, which were reported by ClickOnDetroit.

In their investigation, authorities suggested that Hill, together with Adren's mother, Kentoria Latricia Moss, inflicted the fatal injuries. CBS Detroit quoted Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, who described the events as "chilling" and said that "the defendants in this case worked in tandem to beat and eventually kill this poor child - two adults against an eight-year-old. Little Adren had zero chance of surviving," as per a CBS Detroit statement.

Moss, 32, has been charged with second-degree murder and lying to a peace officer. She is expected to return to court on August 29. During the sentencing, Hill tried to characterize the injuries as accidents arising from boxing lessons and played down concerns about the children's appearance, claiming that playing outside was the cause of their dirty clothes. Presiding Judge John Gillis conveyed his dismay at the severity of the case and expressed a desire to impose a life sentence if not for the plea agreement. "I hope you take these next 18 to 40 years to really think long and hard about what you did to Adren Thimes," Gillis said, as mentioned by ClickOnDetroit.
