Starting on Tuesday, September 2, downtown Colorado Springs will experience a partial yet significant shift in its traffic flow. According to the City of Colorado Springs, Tejon Street will be under construction from Pikes Peak Avenue to East Kiowa Street through December. This construction marks the second and final phase of the Tejon Street Revitalization Project, which aims to enhance outdoor dining, sidewalks, and overall street aesthetics.
As the construction gets underway, vehicles will need to find alternative routes, since this one block will be closed off to all vehicle traffic. The construction efforts focus on improvements that are expected to not just bolster the look of downtown but also to improve pedestrian accessibility and public safety. Despite the vehicle restrictions, pedestrian access will remain open, ensuring that foot traffic to local businesses continues unhindered. However, street parking will be nonexistent until further notice, nudging visitors towards alternative parking solutions.
Local businesses affected by the construction have not been left in the lurch. The city has provided them with vouchers that allow for two hours of free parking in three nearby city garages. This small but significant amenity is shared in anticipation of ensuring that the businesses stay flourishing even as their front doors face the upheavals wrought by cranes and crews.
