Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is embracing a new pathway forward, introducing a regional leadership model aimed at bolstering academic success and focusing on equity. Steering this ship for the Northeast Region is newly appointed Regional Superintendent, Dr. Kymberli R. Chandler, who brings a formidable mix of experience and passion to the role.
According to details from MSCS, Chandler is a seasoned educator with 27 years under her belt, her feet have walked the path from classroom to administration, touching the lives of many students along the way. She has previously served as Network Leader for SOAR Schools, and holds a nine-year tenure with MSCS that includes roles as an Instructional Leadership Director, principal coach, and supervisor.
Her journey began in music, Spanish, drama, and speech education, spanning various K-12 settings. With defining stints as Assistant Principal at Whitehaven High and Manassas High, Chandler took the helm as Sheffield High School Principal, achieving a dramatic academic turnaround. Under her leadership, Cordova High School witnessed a scholarship offer swell from $18 million to $42 million in just two years. Chandler's steadfast belief that "educators are the cavalry" underpins her commitment to empowering youth – a conviction she shared with MSCS in their announcement.
As Regional Superintendent, Chandler will not only continue working on existing programs but also seek to create more robust support structures for schools within her purview. She will be based at the East Regional Offices, housed at Ridgeway High School’s annex, and will have direct oversight of a list of schools that includes Cordova High and White Station High, among many others. This regional model is anticipated to improve operational efficiency, as well as foster a sense of belonging within the school community.
