Calling all community champions: it's time to spotlight the young leaders, service-minded volunteers, and resilient achievers in Hillsborough County. The Board of County Commissioners is accepting nominations for their Youth Excellence and Achievement (YEA!) Awards. These awards are designed to acknowledge middle and high school students who have made significant, positive contributions to their communities.

Three award categories are open for nominations: Leadership, which celebrates students employing critical thinking and communication to guide others; Volunteer or Community Service, recognizing those who've dedicated exceptional time to community betterment, and Success Despite Difficult Odds, honoring students who've made a positive impact despite challenges. According to the Hillsborough County government website, nominations are due by September 17, and can be submitted online.

Last year's awards ceremony, which took place on October 23, 2024, saw six students lauded for their dedication and achievements. Among them was Grayson Zurlage, who managed charity campaigns for veterans, and Shreyashi Bodaka, who, made music education more accessible through her nonprofit. Adam Saunders, notable for hurricane relief efforts and local service, and Lauren Kimball, who combined technology with philanthropy, were recognized in the community service category. The challenges category spotlighted Judah Regans and Jordyn Gourley, whose athletic and academic accomplishments have inspired many despite significant medical hurdles.

The impact of these awards is palpable, not just for their recipients but also for the community at large. They serve as a reminder of the powerful influence young individuals can wield – through both their actions, and the inspiring examples they set.
