A growing concern has gripped parts of Eagle County as the Derby Fire expanded rapidly, prompting authorities to issue new evacuation orders. The fire, which was initially sparked by lightning, swelled from approximately 25 acres to a troubling 245 acres in a mere day. Residents of Sweetwater Road and sections of the Colorado River Road from Sweetwater to Red Dirt Creek have been ordered to evacuate by Wednesday noon, as reported by 9News.
With the Derby Fire's relentless spread, the White River National Forest officials had no other choice but to enact a public closure in the affected areas for the safety of firefighters and the public, despite temperatures soaring in the 90s. The fire is in a remote and rugged terrain, making the battle against it even more challenging. The affected closures span across the Blanco and Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger Districts, encompassing Middle Derby Creek northwest to Island Lakes, according to Vail Daily.
The escalation of the Derby Fire has contributed to the already daunting challenge facing Colorado on its Western Slope, where multiple wildfires continue to ravage the landscape. Among them is the Lee Fire, perched on the edge of becoming the fourth-largest wildfire in Colorado’s history. The collective blazes, including the Lee, Elk, Derby, Stoner Mesa, and Crosho fires, have torched more than 163,000 acres, as documented by the Denver Post.
Evacuation centers, prepared to offer information and resources, will be operational by 7:30 a.m. at the Two Rivers Community Center in Dotsero, the Eagle County Office of Emergency Management announced. Those within the red zones are already under evacuation, while those in the yellow zones should be prepared for such an order.
