The JROTC at Eisenhower High School recently won the Clean Sweep Award for their hard work in keeping local streets clean. The award was given at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, where Mayor Stan Booker praised the cadets for their service. The Clean Sweep Award honors groups that help clean up litter and make the community a better place. Mayor Booker also highlighted the importance of getting involved to be part of the solution, according to the City of Lawton.
Representing the JROTC program, Sergeant Major Steven Hall mentioned that the initiative was modeled after his personal experiences in the military, where cleaning highways was a routine community undertaking. As evident by the actions of these young individuals, who have taken upon themselves the care of 52nd Street adjacent to their school, once a month the cadets spend an hour of their time making sure the roadway stays clean, as reported by the City of Lawton.
Not only do the cleanups provide community hours for the participating students, but they also offer rich experiences in work ethics and leadership development. According to the JROTC's student-led "staff," involvement in these projects under Hall's guidance ensures that cadets shoulder responsibilities and cultivate an inclusive space for peers eyeing a role in the program, as per the City of Lawton.
