El Paso saw a swift response from local law enforcement this week when a theft and credit card abuse suspect was caught following a meticulous investigation. In an announcement via a social media post, El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte shared that the Sheriff’s Office successfully apprehended 41-year-old Danny Joseph Navarro in connection with the crime.
On August 6, deputies from the East Montana Patrol Station were called to a Circle K on Eastlake following a report from the cashier who, after having an unknown male steal their wallet filled with cash, credit, and debit cards, and personal ID, sprang into action. The deputy promptly initiated an investigation, searching for leads by pulling surveillance footage and sifting through license plate reader databases, quick on the heels of the suspect who fled in a gray Honda Accord.
Alerts from the cashier’s financial institutions started coming in about unauthorized transactions with the stolen cards soon after the theft. The deputy, assembling a puzzle with each lead, visited several locations within El Paso where the charges occurred. There, video and still images captured the suspect, Navarro, using the stolen financial tools. He was identified using this evidence.
Two criminal warrants for Theft of Property and Credit Card Abuse were secured against Navarro, setting back the alleged thief with a bond totaling $21,000. Following the start of a surveillance operation on August 7, assisted by additional units and with eyes peering through binoculars, the suspect fell into the hands of law enforcement as they arrested him, later booking him into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
