A controlled burn of a slag dump in Beaver County, initially reported to be under control, escalated into an unforeseen emergency, as confirmed by emergency dispatchers. According to WPXI, the incident, occurring along Route 51 and Woodlawn Road in Center Township, sent up plumes of smoke that could be seen from as far away as Conway, a neighboring community.
The increase in the intensity of the burn, which initially involved old railroad ties, started yesterday, and while it was expected to be a contained event, it burgeoned beyond the confines of a controlled setting; this is according to what the Chief of Beaver County Fire Police detailed in a statement obtained by WTAE. A video submitted by an onlooker captured the heavy smoke and the unsettling orange haze that blanketed the sky.
Firefighting teams were swiftly deployed to combat the blaze, which drew attention due to the significant visual disturbance arising from the smoke. Concerns swiftly rose around potential health and environmental implications, as slag dumps contain industrial waste that could potentially release harmful substances when burned.
As the authorities continue to monitor the aftermath of the fire, updates and advisories are expected to be issued to the public. Residents of the surrounding areas have been advised to remain alert for potential advisories regarding air quality or any other public safety concerns stemming from yesterday's uncontrolled burn.
