Johnson City's search for a new chief of police has come to an end, as City Manager Cathy Ball announced that Eric Dougherty will step into the role starting November 4, bringing over thirty years of law enforcement experience to the table. Announced on August 25, the City of Johnson City's official website details Dougherty's extensive background, including his recent position as operations major and his previous roles leading specialty units such as the SWAT team and the K-9 unit.
Dougherty's career, which began with the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) back in 1993, now leads to him taking over from Chief Billy Church, whose retirement commences on November 3, Dougherty's commitment to public safety and his calm, consistent approach to leadership, have been highlighted as key aspects of his promotion—and as City Manager Cathy Ball pointed out, his "humble nature, strong work ethic, and thoughtful approach to policing" are expected to enhance the progress already made within the department, as mentioned on the City of Johnson City website.
Having also served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves before joining JCPD, and being an East Tennessee State University alumnus, Dougherty's qualifications for the role run deep. His appointment is not only a nod to his past accomplishments but also a vote of confidence in his vision for the future of the department, "I am honored to be chosen as the next chief of the JCPD," said Dougherty in a statement obtained by the City of Johnson City's official website, "The Department has accomplished a great deal under Chief Billy Church’s leadership, and I will focus on continuing that momentum, working with the amazing officers at the JCPD to have a positive impact on our community every day."
As Dougherty prepares to take the helm of the JCPD, the community eyes this leadership change with anticipation, hopeful that Dougherty's three decades of experience and dedicated approach to policing and the well-being of both residents and officers will usher in an era of continued positive impact and safekeeping, "It will be a privilege to step into this role and to serve the people of Johnson City," added Dougherty as per the City of Johnson City website, expressing his humility and sense of responsibility as he prepares to guide the department forward.
