Massachusetts' latest initiative isn't just a walk in the park—it's a full-scale campaign to bring locals and visitors alike to the greener side of the Bay State. MassDOT, DCR, MOOR, and MOTT have come together to launch the MassTrails 10 Campaign, spotlighting ten outstanding trails throughout Massachusetts. According to the official announcement, this collaboration aims to pave the way for adventurers and commuters to explore the natural beauty and tap into the recreational possibilities sprawling across the region.
The campaign, supported by the Conine Family Foundation’s HubLuv initiative, not just highlights the trails but also includes connection options to local transit and broader trail networks. Monica Tibbits-Nutt, the Transportation Secretary and CEO, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “These trails are more than pathways — they are places where people connect, recharge, and discover the natural beauty of the Commonwealth." The MassTrails 10 campaign comes as an open invitation, especially with summer winding down, urging everyone to step outside and discover the assorted experiences these trails have to offer.
Each of the ten trails features on the MassTrails 10 website, complete with suggested routes, amenities, local attractions, and in the future, custom artwork from Massachusetts artists. DCR Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle highlighted the diversity and scope of the trails, from the Norwottuck Branch of the Mass Central Rail Trail in Western Massachusetts to the Cape Cod Rail Trail's way to DCR’s Nickerson State Park. Paul Jahnige, Director of the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation, added, “Outdoor Recreation is a vital part of our state’s identity and economy,” underscoring the role of trails in offering regional recreational opportunities.
In extending the invitation, Kate Fox, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, mentioned, “From cycling along coastal paths to walking rail trails that pass through small towns and historic sites, these shared-use trails create opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors, spend time together, and discover the character of Massachusetts in every region." Guests can plan their adventures with ease, accessing info on connections to local transit, like MBTA or Regional Transit Authority services, through the campaign's website resources.
The MassTrails 10 includes the Charles River Greenway, Northern Strand Community Trail, Minuteman Bikeway, Neponset River Greenway, Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, Cape Cod Rail Trail, Mass Central Rail Trail Norwottuck Branch, Nashua River Rail Trail, Blackstone River Greenway, and Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. This initiative builds upon MassTrails' efforts since 2019, where a majority of their grants have focused on extending and connecting existing trails to one another, pushing forward towards an interconnected network of trails for all users across the state.
