Galveston and Houston drivers are once again navigating a labyrinth of roadway hazards, as extreme heat has recently caused a portion of Seawall Boulevard to buckle. In a statement obtained by ABC13, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials confirmed the damage near 77th Street that occurred over the weekend due to soaring temperatures.

TxDOT crews have worked to quickly patch the road from Sunday to Monday, with plans to return in late September to apply a more permanent solution. Danny Perez, a spokesperson for TxDOT, told ABC13, "We've had some extreme situations over the last few days, the last few weeks, so it can change rapidly." Despite the urgency to repair these roads, inhabitants are to yet face the underlying menace of frequent potholes dotting their everyday travels in Houston.

While the incident in Galveston grabs attention, potholes are a more pervasive problem in the Houston area, as noted in a recent report by Click2Houston. Drivers have reported encountering numerous potholes, particularly along congested routes like Northbound 59 near the 610 interchange. According to one local driver, the count on a daily basis can exceed thirty, complicating both commute and occupation for many.

These road conditions are not simply consequences of the heat but result from a mixture of factors including traffic volume, precipitation, and the age of the roads. "Some roadways, like 610, can see anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 vehicles a day," Perez explained to Click2Houston. TxDOT encourages local residents to always report any road problems, although they stress that drivers are, unfortunately, responsible for any vehicle damage caused by these roadway defects.

Despite TxDOT's efforts to address these issues, Galveston city officials reported to ABC13 that no injuries or damage to vehicles have been reported in connection with the buckled roadway. As the summer heat continues to test the mettle of Texas infrastructure, drivers are urged to remain vigilant and report any road irregularities to ensure swift repair and maintenance.
