A fatal confrontation in Santee between a suspect and law enforcement officers is now under scrutiny after ending in a shooting by deputies. The incident, which took place on a Sunday morning at approximately 11:57 AM, began when San Diego Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a firearm at 9033 Willowgrove Avenue. As reported by the San Diego Police Department, the victims had already fled to safety when deputies arrived.
After canvassing the area, deputies were led to another residence at 9016 Willowgrove Avenue, where the armed suspect had barricaded himself. Negotiations stretched over several hours as the Crisis Negotiation Team and deputies, failing to make contact with the suspect, deployed chemical agents after a gunshot spurred fears of a self-inflicted wound. Despite calling the suspect's phone and attempts for a peaceful resolution, his barricade was continued inside, having refused to speak with negotiators.
In an ensuing standoff, the suspect exited the residence and fired at deputies using a handgun, targeting their armored vehicle. Hoodline stated, "The rounds struck the armored vehicle parked in front of the residence." In response, three deputies, identified by the San Diego PD as Luke Vories, Kevin McCauley, and Parker Robbins, discharged their weapons, which proved fatal for 55-year-old Michael Redding, the suspect in question.
An extensive investigation is underway, scrutinizing the circumstances of the shooting. Homicide Detectives are working to determine criminal liability by reviewing the body camera footage, which the San Diego PD press release confirms was activated during the incident. The San Diego Sheriff's Office will also conduct an internal review of deputies' actions, while the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office monitor proceedings.
