A fire on Eight Mile Road in Warren yesterday morning required the intervention of first responders and caused traffic disruptions as firefighters worked to contain the flames. According to ClickonDetroit, the Warren Fire Department received a call around 4:54 a.m. about a fire in a vacant two-story commercial building located in the 5000 block of Eight Mile, between Ryan and Mound roads.
The blaze led to the temporary closure of Eight Mile Road west of Mound Road, forcing morning commuters to seek alternate routes. Crews brought the fire under control by approximately 5:30 a.m. During the evacuation of three adjacent buildings, as smoke billowed and flames threatened to spread, an elderly man was discovered and safely removed from the premises. Notably, a firefighter sustained a minor injury while suppressing the fire.
In a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit, The Warren Fire Department praised "the swift actions of its firefighters in containing the blaze to the building of origin with only water and smoke damage to the adjacent buildings while also ensuring the safety of nearby residents and businesses." This sentiment was mirrored by The Detroit News, which reported on the efficient containment of the fire and the release of the elderly man who was found during the search and subsequently evaluated by medics.
As the Warren Fire Inspectors look into the cause of the fire, this incident joins a growing list of recent fires in commercial properties around the region, including a historic church in Detroit and a twice-burned vacant building on the city's southwest side.
