Ball Ground, GA faced an overnight fire in its historic downtown, with firefighters swiftly responding to reports of a structure fire yesterday morning. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the blaze was discovered around 3:30 a.m. on Gilmer Ferry Road, where responders found heavy smoke and visible flames erupting from the roof of a vacant commercial building.
Efforts to subdue the fire were quickly put into action, as multiple hose lines were deployed and ladder trucks were used to bring the situation under control. The Cherokee County fire services managed to quickly use elevated streams from two ladder trucks to aggressively control the blaze, as described in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First. This coordination was seen as a testament to the effective and rapid response of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services (CCFES) personnel.
Following the incident, a section of Gilmer Ferry Road remained closed until the early morning, allowing crews to secure the scene and ensure the safety of first responders and the public. The fire, which was eventually brought under control, left the building, already empty before the incident, further scarred by the tendrils of the uncontrolled flames.
What caused the historic building to burst into flames is still a matter being investigated by the CCFES Fire Investigation Team. As the community waits to learn the origins of the fire, local officials have pledged to thoroughly investigate and, should it be necessary, to entirely revise their current fire safety protocols to better protect the storied structures of downtown Ball Ground. "This historic part of our community is a treasure that we need to preserve," a Cherokee County official told FOX 5 Atlanta.
