A tragic case has emerged from Fort Stewart, Georgia, where a husband and wife have been indicted by a federal grand jury for the death of their child due to starvation. The indictment, unsealed on August 8 by a federal court, was reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. Brandon M. Kelley, 29, and Stacey D. Kelley, 26, face charges of Felony Murder and two counts of Second Degree Murder after their child, Vyolet Kelley, was found to have died from lack of adequate nourishment and medical attention.
The Kelleys were living at Fort Stewart due to Brandon Kelley's status as an enlisted soldier. This case has now found its way into the legal system with the potential for life sentences, at a location known for its military presence, not for such civilian nightmares. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, "The family lived at Fort Stewart because Brandon Kelley was an enlisted soldier during the time outlined in the indictment."
Acting United States Attorney Tara M. Lyons expressed the weight of the situation saying on the U.S. Department of Justice, "The allegations in this case are heartbreaking on many levels. Our office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to pursue justice." The United States Army Criminal Investigative Division led the investigation with Assistant United States Attorneys Timothy P. Dean and E. Greg Gilluly, Jr., taking the lead on prosecution.
As legal proceedings move forward, it’s important to recognize that an indictment is not a conviction, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, should a guilty verdict be reached, the Kelleys would be facing severe repercussions in the federal prison system, where there is no parole. Those needing more details can reach out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for further information, their statement read, “For any questions, please contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office at (912) 652-4422.”
