Fort Worth residents are being called to action, not to the polls but to an online voting booth of sorts, where they have the opportunity to leave their mark on the city in a significant way. This time, it's not about elected officials or city policies, but the naming of the new public library. The library, a sprawling $12.3 million project, is taking shape at 1297 Avondale/Haslet Road, and the city wants locals to have their say. Voting, as reported City of Fort Worth, is open through Sept. 10.
Citizens with ideas and a penchant for naming had tossed their suggestions into the ring earlier in August, resulting in more than 150 proposals for the library's moniker. From those submissions, thanks to the vetting by a committee of Library and City leadership, elected officials, and very much involved community members, four names have made the final cut. Those in the running are "Prairie Sky Branch," "Sendera Springs Branch," "Ranch Springs Branch," and "Ranch Crossing Branch," each name reflecting a facet of Fort Worth's cultural and environmental landscape.
The vote is easily cast via an online form on the city's website. Whichever name wins this civic popularity contest will decree a title upon the facility, and in doing so, it will encapsulate the spirit of a community that is rapidly expanding. This new library stands as a commitment to serving the literary and educational needs of a burgeoning population in the far northwest.
