In the Columbus suburb of Gahanna, a new partnership between local first responders and Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools is looking to provide solace and support to students caught in the crosshairs of life's harshest moments. Flagship to their joint efforts is "Handle With Care," a program aimed to discreetly signal educators to the need for a gentle touch when a child has witnessed or undergone a traumatic event. First responders are now trained to shoot off an alert, shorn of detailed circumstance, to school officials - a beacon that asks them to temper their expectations and offer a kinder gaze quietly.
Underpinning this initiative is a confidentiality that eschews the need to share sensitive information freely. "Handle With Care" extends to teachers and staff the mere essentials - a student's name and age - enabling a response that upholds the child's dignity within the halls and classrooms where they spend a significant portion of their day. In an announcement detailed on the City of Gahanna website, Gahanna School Resource Officer Crystal Jones expressed enthusiasm for the program. Jones believes it's a meaningful step in being present for the youth, especially "with everything our young people are navigating today."
The core of Handle With Care resides within the trauma-informed training that the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools' team has embraced. Staff members have been armed with the skills to discern distress and modulate their approach accordingly, creating a compassionate sanctuary for those in need. The collaborative spirit of this program has not gone unnoticed, with Gahanna Police Chief Jeff Spence commenting on the existing synergy between law enforcement and educators. He credits the program with bridging the gap that sometimes exists between a crisis at home and a student's experience at school.
Emphasizing the breadth of support, Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tracey Deagle pointed to the importance of nurturing "the whole child." The emergent partnership epitomizes the school's commitment to fostering an environment where children feel "safe, seen, and supported every day." The unified front poised by the Gahanna Division of Police and Mifflin Township Fire Department, duly prepared through Handle With Care training, has propelled the City of Gahanna to the forefront of such collaborative efforts.
