Six individuals, including two Georgia inmates and two Chinese nationals, have been slapped with federal charges for allegedly running a fentanyl trafficking ring. The indictment, unsealed on August 7, claims these individuals conspired to distribute synthetic controlled substances, such as fentanyl, originating from China into Georgia's middle district. The U.S. Attorney's Office laid down the charges following an investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with assistance from the GBI and Georgia Department of Corrections.
According to the indictment, Devito Duran Young and Andreaus Benard Oliver, Sr., who are both serving time in Macon State Prison, are accused to have conspired to acquire and distribute fentanyl and synthetic cannabinoids from China since 2023. Xin Wang and Gao Yong, the Chinese nationals implicated, allegedly facilitated the global distribution of these synthetic substances, managing cryptocurrency payments for the transactions. Wang is accused of overseeing fentanyl sales worldwide while Yong is alleged to have been in direct contact with customers, overseeing the sale and shipment of the narcotics.
The operation apparently was intricate, using cryptocurrency and encrypted communications to evade detection. A package from China, intercepted by authorities, led to a July 22, 2024 search of Oliver Jr.'s residence, uncovering drug paraphernalia, cash, and ledgers related to the distribution network. In a statement obtained by the Justice Department, Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Peach is handling the prosecution of this case, which underscores the ongoing issue of controlled substance trafficking and its penetration into correctional facilities.
Indictment details shared by the Justice Department illustrate a complex operation, with Young reportedly issuing orders from his cell, leveraging contraband cell phones to coordinate with the overseas suppliers. The operation was so far-reaching that even shipping labels addressed to inmates across various correctional facilities were uncovered during the raid. With $170,000 in cryptocurrency already seized from Wang as part of the investigation, authorities are now set to thoroughly prosecute all involved, with trials pending for the individuals currently in federal custody.
All six individuals named in the indictment face significant prison sentences and fines if convicted. While an indictment only represents allegations of criminal conduct and not proof, the charges underscore the aggressive stance law enforcement is taking against the illicit distribution of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs. All defendants in the case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
