Expanding upon a service that's crucial for maintaining the independence of older New Yorkers, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans to bolster the state's partnership with GoGoGrandparent, a transportation initiative that's been bridging critical transit gaps for senior citizens. According to an announcement by the Governor's office, the program administered by the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and local aging offices ensures older adults have access to no-cost rides, aiming to diminish social isolation and promote community engagement.
The program, which was initiated in 2022, has considerably grown over the years, supplying over 24,000 rides through local offices, as mentioned in the release by the Governor's office. As one of the fastest-growing demographics in the U.S., older adults are often faced with diminishing support networks and an increasing desire for autonomy. The GoGoGrandparent initiative addresses these challenges, playing a pivotal role in facilitating essential trips for older individuals. Despite being at varying implementation stages, 32 counties in New York State currently offer this transportation solution.
"Our unique and innovative transportation models will build on our commitment to ensuring that every New Yorker — regardless of age or mobility — can live with independence, dignity, and connection," Governor Hochul told the Governor's office. In response to the aging population's needs, the state is elevating its efforts by scaling the partnership to deliver tangible solutions targeting socio-economic barriers that can leave older adults isolated.
The GoGoGrandparent service is designed for individuals who may not have access to, or be comfortable using, smartphone-based apps. The program also trains drivers to assist with additional needs, such as walkers and wheelchairs, providing an accessible transportation option for seniors.
Acknowledging the program's significance, GoGoGrandparent Co-founder and CEO Justin Boogaard commented, "GoGoGrandparent was created to help aging adults continue to live independently — and safe, reliable transportation is a big part of that. We have heard from hundreds of our New York State riders that without GoGo, they would be housebound," in a statement obtained by the Governor's office.
