In a significant move towards supporting children with complex disabilities, New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently inaugurated The Center for Discovery’s Children's Specialty Hospital in Rock Hill. Alongside Dr. Terry Hamlin and other leadership staff, Hochul toured a facility specifically geared toward specialized short-term inpatient care for conditions such as autism, emphasizing New York's commitment to health care at a time when, as she pointed out, federal policies threaten to scale back on such vital support, as reported by the Governor's Office.
The project, a beacon of hope for many, comes to fruition after a decade’s worth of planning and collaboration, successively drawing a $48 million USDA loan, and additional state support , it stands not merely as a facility but a testament to cross-sector cooperation. Notably, the hospital presents a new care model redirecting from long-term residential care towards proactive treatments, aligning with Governor Hochul's stance on bolstering the state's health care workforce and supporting New Yorkers with developmental disabilities as they lead more fulfilling lives.
TCFD CEO Dr. Terry Hamlin hailed the hospital as a place where "hope meets innovation," a sentiment echoed by Governor Hochul who noted the importance of investments in health care, particularly under the duress of cuts proposed by the Republican agenda, according to the Governor's Office announcement. The Children's Specialty Hospital is not just a medical facility, but it weaves together classrooms, sensory rooms, a therapeutic gym and even a Food is Medicine greenhouse, in support of a holistically designed patient experience that could serve as a model nationwide, perhaps even globally.
Giving a glimpse into the facility's impact, the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities Commissioner Willow Baer stressed the importance of this integrated care option advocating for health equity; meanwhile, Senator Charles Schumer, who was instrumental in securing federal investment for the project, pointed out the wider health and economic benefits, including the creation of over 400 jobs, as he said in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office.
This innovation in care is as much a community centerpiece as it is a health care facility; should families need more information about the Children’s Specialty Hospital, contact details are available with Michael Rosen, the Executive VP of Development, Marketing and Strategic Communications at TCFD, who can be reached at [email protected].
