Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $10 million investment in New York’s parks and recreation areas. The funding, provided through the Municipal Parks and Recreation (MPR) Grant Program, will support 17 projects across the state aimed at enhancing local public spaces. According to the Governor's office, the initiative reflects the state’s ongoing effort to maintain accessible and well-maintained community recreational areas.
The MPR grants will support a range of recreational upgrades, including playground renovations, basketball court resurfacing, and the addition of new features like elevated boardwalks and splash pads. “By expanding access to recreational opportunities, we are investing in the future of our communities so New Yorkers can safely explore and connect with our parks and outdoor spaces,” Governor Hochul said in a press release. The grants can cover up to 90% of eligible project costs, with a maximum award of $1 million per project.
Each project demonstrates a local commitment to improving recreational facilities. New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons noted that, with Governor Hochul’s leadership and investments from the Bond Act, these grants will help revitalize communities across the state and ensure parks and recreation areas remain welcoming, safe, and accessible. Funded projects include the redesign of Chilmark Park playground in Briarcliff Manor and the Garrison Park Wading Pool and Bathhouse Project in Williamsville, both intended to create inclusive spaces for New Yorkers of all ages and abilities.
This funding originates from the Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. The act provides support for sustainable projects focused on addressing climate change and preserving New York’s natural resources, in addition to improving parks.
