The political landscape in Harris County grew contentious following a fallout at Commissioners Court over a proposed early childhood funding measure. Judge Lina Hidalgo called on fellow commissioners to approve a proposal, which would have allowed voters to weigh in on a one-cent property tax intended to support childcare and early learning programs for low-income families. According to KHOU 11 News, Hidalgo cited that the tax would cost the average Harris County homeowner around $24 per year.
Despite Judge Hidalgo’s efforts, the initiative fell into disarray and failed to advance before the noon deadline yesterday, missing its chance to appear on the November ballot. As tensions rose, Hidalgo brought children who benefit from county programs to the forefront—a move that sparked a heated exchange. Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey eventually read a motion to censure Hidalgo. She was absent during both the reading and the subsequent 3-1 vote to censure her, as noted by KHOU 11 News.
The backlash was swift. In the aftermath, Commissioner Lesley Briones criticized Hidalgo’s conduct as “disruptive” and said it detracted from important county matters, according to a statement reported by Click2Houston. Commissioner Adrian Garcia also condemned the actions, calling the use of children to influence the court “particularly offensive.” He added, “The people of Harris County deserve better.”
Hidalgo, standing by her actions, expressed extreme disappointment in her colleagues' failure to support the measure. "I think we’re sort of, as Democrats, becoming what we voted against," Hidalgo told Click2Houston. "I’m so disappointed, but we live to fight another day." Further, she highlighted her determination to keep fighting for the affected children and families in an Instagram video alongside program beneficiaries who now face losing access to child care. Her engagement in social media adds a personal touch to the contentious political issue at stake. As for the censure, it serves as a formal disapproval but has no effect on Judge Hidalgo's position.
