A Delaware County mother is facing manslaughter charges after her three-year-old daughter was found dead inside a car in the town of Milford, Maine. Kelly Brown, a 40-year-old from Havertown, was arrested early Sunday morning and the cause of the young girl's death is pending an autopsy, as reported by 6abc.
According to court documents obtained by NBC Philadelphia, Brown was visiting family in Maine and had intended to teach her daughter about environmental protection, during the camping trip that turned tragic she had visited a Freshie's gas station early last Saturday; this is where Brown claimed to have left the child and their 13-year-old family dog in her Nissan Murano before she was allegedly swept away by the river while retrieving a trash bag, which led to her being unable to return to her vehicle for several hours.
Court records contrast with Brown's version of the events, highlighting that surveillance footage contradicted her account of the incident. The WAFB reported that video from the parking lot showed Brown briefly returning to her car just before 6 a.m. that same day, then she left again before officers and first responders discovered the fatal scene 14 hours later.
Further investigation revealed from discussions with family members that Brown had ceased taking her anxiety medication, which led to hallucinations and there may have been marijuana use involved, this info according to police statements. When authorities arrived, they found her with scratches and bruises, details on this came from WAFB, she claimed to have swam across the river after falling in and only realized police were present when she noticed them in the area. A judge has since set her bail at $50,000.
