Hawaii's Governor Josh Green is embarking on an East Coast and European tour, starting by dropping off his daughter for her first college semester before tackling official duties across the Atlantic. According to an announcement by the Office of the Governor, the family trip commences today, August 24, with Green taking on the role of a proud parent before switching gears to his responsibilities as president of the Council of State Governments, an engagement kicking off in Italy on August 29.
During his stay in Italy, Governor Green has a packed itinerary, including meetings with Italian officials and a unique visit to the Vatican where he will extend an invite to Pope Leo XIV, hoping to convince His Holiness to visit Kalaupapa on Moloka‘i, which is an area rich in history and serenity, and His presence would certainly uplift the community's spirits. Green's whirlwind visit is not just a melding of politics and personal endeavors but an exercise in diplomacy, cultural exchange, and perhaps, even a touch of spiritual networking; he's set to return to Hawaiian soil on September 7.
While Governor Green explores faraway lands, Hawaii will not be without leadership. Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke is stepping up to fill Green's shoes as acting Governor from this afternoon, August 24 until the morning of September 6, followed by a brief stint by Attorney General Anne Lopez, who will cover the role until Green's return. This governance relay underscores the continuity within Hawaii's political structure, ensuring that the wheels of government keep turning even as its chief executive tends to matters beyond state borders.
